What Online Therapeutic Tutoring Looks Like

Online therapeutic tutoring delivers the same integrated combination of therapeutic support and academic instruction as in-person work — through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform, shared digital workspace, and real-time collaboration tools. Sessions are individualized to your goals, your pace, and your learning profile.

Our therapeutic tutors are licensed therapists and highly trained educators — not one or the other. In a single session, your tutor may work on building executive function strategies to tackle a challenging writing assignment, while also addressing the anxiety or avoidance behaviors that have been keeping you stuck. This integrated approach means nothing falls through the cracks between "the tutor" and "the therapist."

Online delivery makes this powerful combination accessible to families and adult learners who live outside our physical offices in Westwood, MA and San Diego, CA — and to anyone whose schedule, health, or geography makes traveling to appointments difficult.

The Advantages of Online Delivery

Decades of research support the effectiveness of online educational and therapeutic services. Here is what our clients consistently find most valuable.

🌐

Access Regardless of Location

Whether you are in a rural community, a military family, or simply far from a specialist, online sessions eliminate geography as a barrier. We serve learners in 44+ states.

🕐

Flexible Scheduling

No commute time means sessions can fit before school, during a lunch break, after work, or on weekends. Adult learners especially benefit from scheduling freedom that respects busy professional lives.

🏡

Comfort of a Familiar Environment

Learning from home reduces transition-related anxiety for many students with ADHD, autism, or school-refusal patterns. The learner's own space is often calmer and more conducive to focus.

📋

Real-Time Access to Actual Schoolwork

Students can instantly share their screen, pull up assignments, and open course portals during the session. There is no "I forgot to bring it" — the work is always right there.

🔒

Secure & Confidential

Sessions are conducted on encrypted, HIPAA-compliant platforms. Your privacy — and your child's — is protected with the same standards applied to in-person clinical services.

📈

Research-Backed Effectiveness

Studies show online tutoring and teletherapy produce outcomes comparable to in-person for most learner profiles. See our research links below for peer-reviewed evidence.

🔄

Continuity Through Life Transitions

College students, families who travel, or learners mid-relocation can maintain the same tutor and therapeutic relationship without interruption. Consistency is especially important for building executive function habits.

💰

Lower Total Cost

Eliminating commute time and travel costs makes effective support more accessible — particularly for families managing multiple specialists or long distances to urban centers.

For Every Age, Every Stage, Every Level

There is no upper age limit and no "right" academic level to begin. Our therapeutic tutors work with learners across the entire lifespan and across the full spectrum of academic challenge — from foundational literacy to graduate-level coursework.

Early Learners

Kindergarten – Grade 3. Foundational reading, phonics, early math, school adjustment, and building positive learning habits early.

Elementary

Grades 4–8. Expanding literacy, writing fluency, organization, ADHD support, test preparation, and managing academic demands.

High School

Grades 9–12. College-prep academics, SAT/ACT prep, executive function, anxiety, motivation, and accommodations navigation.

College & Grad

Undergraduate through doctoral level. Study systems, writing, GRE/LSAT prep, ADHD in higher education, and disability accommodations.

Adults

No age ceiling. Career-related skill-building, returning-to-education support, reading or math remediation, and late-diagnosed learning differences.

When In-Person May Be a Better Fit

We believe in matching each learner to the delivery format most likely to help them succeed. For most people, online works beautifully. But we will always tell you honestly when a different approach may serve you better.

Very Young Children (Ages 4–6)

Young learners who benefit from physical manipulatives, hands-on materials, and the co-regulation that comes with physical proximity may find in-person sessions more effective — at least initially.

Significant Behavioral Support Needs

Learners who require consistent physical redirection, crisis de-escalation protocols, or structured behavioral supports that must be applied in real time may be better served in person.

Sensory Processing Challenges Requiring Environmental Control

Some learners with significant sensory needs require a carefully engineered physical environment that is difficult to replicate at home. An in-person setting allows for more precise sensory management.

Limited Technology Access or Connectivity

Reliable internet and a device with a working camera and microphone are required. In households where these are not available, in-person remains the right option — and we can help identify community resources.

Strong Personal Preference

Some learners simply connect better in a physical space and perform significantly better there. Preference matters. If you try online and find it is not the right fit, we will work with you to find an alternative.

Not sure which is right for you? Our free consultation is designed exactly for this. Schedule a call with our team and we will help you figure it out together.

Your Questions About Online Therapeutic Tutoring

Answers to the questions families and adult learners ask most often. Don't see yours? Visit our full FAQ page or reach out directly.

Is online therapeutic tutoring as effective as in-person?
For most learners, yes. Research consistently demonstrates that online delivery of both tutoring and therapeutic interventions produces outcomes comparable to in-person services for school-age children through adults. Our tutors use secure video, shared digital whiteboards, and screen-sharing tools to create an interactive, engaging session. The primary advantages of in-person delivery apply in specific situations — such as very young children who need physical materials, or learners whose behavioral needs require hands-on co-regulation. See our research section for peer-reviewed evidence.
What ages and grade levels does online therapeutic tutoring serve?
We serve learners from kindergarten through adulthood — including adult learners returning to education, college and graduate students, and professionals building academic skills. There is no upper age limit. Our therapeutic tutors tailor every approach to the individual's age, developmental stage, learning profile, and academic goals. Learn more about what we do and who we help.
What subjects and academic skill levels can be addressed online?
We support learners across all core academic areas: reading and literacy, writing and composition, mathematics, executive function and study skills, test preparation (SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT — including accommodations-based prep), and subject-specific tutoring through graduate level. Sessions are individualized whether a learner is working below grade level, at grade level, or is academically advanced but struggling with anxiety, attention, or motivation.
Which states are served through online therapeutic tutoring?
We provide online therapeutic tutoring to families and adult learners across 44+ states. Through the PSYPACT interstate compact and our network of credentialed therapeutic tutors, we serve learners across most of the United States. Contact us to confirm availability in your state.
What technology do I need for sessions?
A reliable internet connection, a computer or tablet with a camera and microphone, and access to our secure video platform is all you need. Our team will walk you through setup before your first session at no charge. No special software purchases are required.
How is online therapeutic tutoring different from standard online tutoring?
Standard online tutoring addresses academic content. Online therapeutic tutoring integrates licensed clinical psychology with that instruction — addressing anxiety, ADHD, avoidance, depression, low motivation, and other psychological barriers that academic tutoring alone cannot touch. Learn more about why this combination works.
Does insurance cover online therapeutic tutoring?
Coverage varies by plan and state. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly and asking about coverage for "educational therapy" or "psychological counseling with academic support." Our team can provide documentation to support your inquiry. Reach out to us for guidance specific to your situation.
How do I get started?
Schedule a free consultation. During that call, we will discuss your goals, learning history, and any previous evaluations, and match you with the right therapeutic tutor. Most families are matched and beginning sessions within one to two weeks.
